I don’t know about you, but when out walking my dog I have noticed this time of year there seem to be more skunks out and about.
Skunks are all over the place right now looking for food to get ready for hibernation. Dogs are curious when they see one on a walk or out in the yard playing. Before you know it, they end up with a face full of skunk spray. If your dog gets sprayed, here is a simple solution to mix up and won’t have you driving around looking for as much tomato juice to fill a tub.
In an open container, mix 1 litre of peroxide with ¼ cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon of Lemon dishwashing soap.
In the meantime, keep your dog outside for as long as possible while you get the solution prepped. It helps to keep the smell out of your house as soon as possible. Apply the solution to your dog and let sit for as long as your pet will tolerate it. Be sure not to get it in their eyes. If you notice that your pets’ eyes are red and irritated from the spray, wash with cool water. You may have to flush multiple times. Clean and rinse the mixture from the fur. Repeat as necessary.
You can now wash your dog in a pet shampoo of your choice to give them a cleaner fresher smell.
If your dog has been so kind to rub up against your leg, you can wash your clothes with laundry soap and baking soda to help get rid of the smell.
